
VFW Post 9601 Adjutant John McPartland:
Born and reared in the East Bay, John joined the Army right out of High School and served in Germany and the 82nd Airborne before being commissioned in 66 from OCS. He served two tours in Viet Nam (Dong Ha: 108th ARTY GRP, Xuan Loc/Bein Hoa: 199th LT INF BDE) between 68 and 70 and left Active Duty in 1970.
He joined the Oakland Fire Department and Army Reserves and rose through the ranks in both, retiring from the fire service as a Battalion Chief in 96 and the Army as a Colonel in 99. During that time (among other things) he was a paramedic, a member of the Urban Search and Rescue Task Force that deployed to the Northridge Earthquake in 94, and was recalled to Active Duty in 90 and 91 in support of "Operation Desert Storm."
John and his wife, Maria, have lived in Castro Valley since 76; both of their children, Christina and David, have grown and "Left the Nest." He currently works as a BART Safety Specialist (coordinating fire service training and exercises) and teaches part time in local community colleges.
As a community volunteer, John is a Captain in the Alameda County Dive Unit and member of the local Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) where he has deployed as a Logistics Chief and paramedic for several years in support of California's wildland fires, to the Salt Lake City Olympics in 02 and New Orleans for Hurricane Katrina in 05.
